5 Tips To Avoid Burnout As An Entrepreneur
Life as an entrepreneur can be hard. But if you are feeling overwhelmed, exhausted and like you are on an emotional roller coaster, then you may be on the verge of burning out.
Choosing to be an entrepreneur is empowering and exciting. It can be a lucrative path to living your dream life on your terms. Most entrepreneurs are after the freedom that comes with building a thriving business. But many of them find out what a bumpy ride it can be and if they don’t take care of themselves both physically and mentally, they can wind up burnt out.
Entrepreneur burnout happens when you are under intense stress for a long period of time. Common symptoms include feeling overwhelmed, anxious exhausted, angry, and emotional. You may also experience insomnia, headaches, foggy brain, a loss of excitement and passion in your business, and a loss of productivity.
This article will explore the biggest cause of entrepreneur burn out as well as five self-care strategies that will help you eliminate burn for good.
Take Charge of What You Can Control
I recently read an article in the Wall Street Journal titled: Women Working Longer Hours, Sleeping Less As They Juggle Commitments. The article reported that women are sacrificing sleep and socializing so they can work longer hours and do a larger portion of the housework and caregiving compared to men. Not surprisingly, more and more women across the nation are reporting being unhappy and exhausted compared to previous decades.
Add on top of that the level of stress that comes with running your own business and you’ve got yourself a recipe for the most epic burnout of the century.
Since you can’t control the inevitable stress that will come with the entrepreneurial journey, your only option for avoiding the burnout trap is to make changes to the aspects of your life that you can control.
I’m talking about self-care. But, I’m not suggesting the typical advice like getting your nails done, although that’s not a bad idea. What I’m really talking about is developing an integrative approach to being a CEO. One where you cultivate a strong mind-body-spirit connection, so you are able to best support your health and well-being which in turn allows you to show up fully while avoiding burnout. #likeaboss
Tune Into The Present
Tuning into the present is all about fostering a strong mind-body-spirit connection. This is simply the idea that our thoughts, feelings, beliefs, and attitudes can positively or negatively affect our overall health. You can think of it as mindfulness. It may sound like a bunch woo-woo, but there’s some pretty strong scientific evidence confirming the medical and mental benefits of mind-body-spirit practices. The whole concept is about being present in the moment and tuning into the messages your body is sending you. When you are tuned in to these messages, you can make skillful choices to support your physical and mental well-being.
For example, last week I launched a new webinar funnel and was interacting all day on social media. That evening I was “wired.” My mind was racing, and I couldn’t really snap out of it and relax. I found myself in bed at 10:30 p.m. still scrolling Facebook. Finally, I tuned into the present moment and realized just how overactive my mind was and how anxious I was feeling. As soon as I realized that, I turned off my ipad and meditated to calm my mind. Poof! I was asleep in less than twenty minutes. If I hadn’t taken the time to check in with myself, I could have easily stayed up another hour or two which would have made the next day a complete wash. That is the power of the mind-body-spirit connection.
Commit to A Spiritual Practice
I can speak from first-hand experience that committing to a spiritual practice is life changing. I used to get stuck in my head a lot. If I’m being totally honest with you, I still do. I get caught in all kinds of dramas and stories and if I’m not careful, they can take over my day and completely block me from forward momentum in my business – and my personal life. I’ve found that spiritual work, like meditation, mantras, praying and mindfulness is the very best tool for eliminating my negative overthinking tendencies. And there’s a TON of research backing me up on this.
Tools like meditation and mantras (among others) are scientifically proven to promote happiness and reduce stress and anxiety. The best part is that the effects of spiritual work are immediate – which means when you are feeling angry, upset, unhappy, A.D.D. or anxious, you have a go to resource for immediately feeling better.
Give it a try. The next time you find yourself obsessing over something that isn’t serving you, take 5 minutes to sit upright in silence and just practice some deep breathing. I promise you will feel amazing by the end of that five minutes and you’ll be able to recommit to your day without all the head drama.
Nourish Your Mind & Body
This is a big one. As busy entrepreneurs, girlfriends, wives, mothers etc. we all too often put ourselves last. And the easiest thing for us to not commit to is a healthy diet. Now I’m not talking about diet in the sense of weight-loss or keto or paleo or whatever the latest diet torture trend. I’m talking about feeding your body in a way that nourishes your mind and busy and allows you to function at your best. The truth is, that is different for everyone.
A few years I was stressed to the max with my brick and mortar fitness studio. I was working 24/7 and I wasn’t taking care of myself in terms of coping with stress. I started having panic attacks and all kinds of inflammation issues. I went to an integrative doctor who diagnosed me with adrenal fatigue and leaky gut syndrome. Turns out, I had a ton of food intolerance's that were wreaking havoc on my body but I was so out of sync with myself that I didn’t recognize the signals my body was sending me after I ate the foods that were making me sick. Huh, who knew?!
He put me on a specific diet that avoided the food intolerance's and after a few weeks something very unexpected happened – I noticed I didn’t feel depressed anymore and my concentration was better than it had been in years. I also stopped having the panic attacks. HOLY CRAP! Food has the power to heal.
My best advice for nourishing your body and mind is to stick to real, non-processed, organic foods and pay attention to how they make you feel. Avoid the foods that make you feel icky. You may just find that your tendency to feel anxious, panicked or depressed is strongly linked to the foods you are putting in your body.
Incorporate Mindful Movement
Movement is one of the best tools for creating space to reconnect with yourself. But I’m not talking about going to a crossfit class. I’m talking about practicing mindful movement which is all about using your body in a mindful way so you can be present and listen to the messages your body is sending.
Practices like yoga or tai chi are a great place to start. And if that feels too intimidating, then try a mindful walking meditation where you walk outside barefoot and take note of the sounds, smells, touches and feelings that surround you. This is such an amazingly refreshing way to disconnect from the business of work and life and just be. I promise you will feel amazing afterwards.
